Bentley has revealed how it created the soundtrack for its next-generation electric vehicles, developing a new approach to performance sound that draws inspiration from the brand’s most famous engines.
The Bentley Dynamic Symphony has been created for the upcoming Bentley Torcal, with the luxury manufacturer looking beyond traditional artificial engine noises to create something more emotional and distinctive.
Rather than attempting to replicate the sound of a combustion engine, Bentley says the project focuses on recreating the feelings associated with its historic powertrains, from the supercharged models of the 1930s to the legendary 6.75-litre V8 and W12 engines.
During development, Bentley engineers recorded and analysed the sound of its V8 engine before comparing its characteristics with a live drummer using parabolic speakers. The experiment revealed similarities in rhythm, energy and cadence, highlighting how small variations and imperfections contribute to the emotional appeal of mechanical sounds.
Using those findings, musicians created an entirely original soundtrack featuring real instruments, including drums, viola and bass guitar.
The resulting sound responds to driver inputs, increasing engagement while giving Bentley’s electric models a unique identity.
As manufacturers move towards quieter electric powertrains, sound is becoming an increasingly important part of the driving experience. Brands including Hyundai, BMW and Porsche have all explored new approaches to EV sound, but Bentley’s takes inspiration from music rather than motorsport.
The company says the goal was not to imitate the past, but to create a new sonic signature for the electric era.
