The BYD Seal U DM-i has been named Best In-Car Technology at the Autotrader Drivers’ Choice Awards 2026, beating both the Tesla Model Y and Jaecoo 7 in a category decided entirely by its motorists.
That matters because unlike many automotive awards, these weren’t chosen by journalists sitting in conference rooms arguing over specification sheets. More than 160,000 UK motorists shared their real-world ownership experiences to determine the winners.

According to Autotrader, the Seal U impressed its readers with the sheer amount of technology included as standard, its premium-feeling interior and a package that delivers strong value for money.
One reader said they loved “how much kit comes as standard and how premium it looks”, while another said the technology gave them confidence in the car’s safety and made driving easier.
The victory formed part of a double win for BYD, with the Seal U DM-i also collecting Best Value New Car in the same awards.

Steve Beattie, deputy country manager at BYD UK, said: “It’s a huge privilege to accept both awards for the Seal U DM-i, and the fact that they have been decided by the people who have bought and lived with our cars makes it even more special.”
The Seal U’s cabin centres around a 15.6in rotating touchscreen, digital driver display, wireless smartphone charging, connected services, over-the-air updates and a premium Dynaudio sound system.
Tesla’s Model Y finished as runner-up, continuing to impress owners with its minimalist interface, huge central display, rear passenger touchscreen and software-driven approach to vehicle ownership. Although if you’ve read our recent Tesla speaker upgrade guide, you’ll know many owners still see room for improvement in the audio department.

The Jaecoo 7 completed the podium, combining a large portrait touchscreen, Sony audio system, ambient lighting and extensive driver-assistance technology.
What perhaps stands out most is that drivers didn’t simply reward the most futuristic technology. They rewarded technology that was easy to live with. As Autotrader’s Rory Reid put it, the Seal U succeeded because it combines thoughtful features with genuine value, proving that in-car technology isn’t just about having the biggest screen anymore – it’s about making everyday driving easier.
