JL Audio’s New Compact Amps – Big Sound, Small Boot

If your boot is packed already (shopping, child buggy, items for the local charity shop), but you’re craving serious sound, these new amplifiers from JL Audio, now a Garmin company, are worthy of a look. Just launched are two models in the RD line: the six-channel RD800/6 (800W total) and the five-channel RD900/5+ (900W total), which has a 3-way crossover advantage over its predecessor.

Each amp offers four channels of 100W into a 2 ohm load, then the six-channel has a pair of channels capable of 200W each into a 2 ohm load, while the five-channel has a 500W channel for a subwoofer. All channel pairs are bridgeable, with the RD900/5+ offering a 12 dB per octave high-pass filter, additional bandpass filter on its rear channels, and dedicated low-pass filter for the sub channel. The RD800/6, meanwhile, has triple high-pass filters or full three-way crossover capability.

They’re compact, efficient, and designed to pack a punch without cooking your wiring or sacrificing your boot space. Key features include NexD switching technology and low distortion under load, so if you’re building a serious install in a car that doesn’t have room for a full rack, these amps make a lot of sense. Pro audio performance meets everyday usability. Expect to pay around £500 for the RD800.6 and £570 for the RD900/5+ upon release.
