Mercedes-AMG’s New Electric SUV Wants to Make Your Seat Shake with Cutting-Edge Tech

Mercedes-AMG’s new GT SUV packs supercar-rivalling performance into an electric SUV, but its technology story starts inside the cabin. A sweeping digital cockpit, multiple screens and a software platform controlling everything from infotainment to driving dynamics turn the dashboard into a high-tech command centre.

The driver faces a 10.2in digital instrument display alongside a 14in multimedia screen angled towards them. A further 14in display is available for the front passenger, creating an expansive digital layout across the dashboard. The system runs the latest generation of Mercedes-Benz’s MBUX infotainment on its MB.OS operating system, which integrates the vehicle’s functions through a connected software architecture.

Drivers can personalise the displays with different layouts, including AMG-specific graphics, performance information, vehicle temperatures, tyre data and navigation. The MBUX interface also uses a customisable Zero Layer to surface relevant information, suggestions and recently used apps, aiming to make frequently accessed functions easier to reach.

An optional Burmester High-End 4D Surround Sound System adds premium audio to the cabin, complete with stainless-steel speaker grilles. Features include a hybrid amplifier, seat-mounted inducers that vibrate in time with the music, personalised sound profiles and a VIP Seat setting that prioritises the front passenger.

The digital experience extends beyond entertainment and navigation. AMG-specific applications and controls allow drivers to tailor the SUV’s responses, handling and traction. On models equipped with the AMG Dynamic Plus Package, three rotary controls provide direct access to the AMG Race Engineer Control Unit, giving drivers a more tactile alternative to touchscreen menus.

Mercedes-AMG has also built plenty of theatre into the electric driving experience. Its AMGForce Sport+ mode combines simulated V8 or six-cylinder engine sounds, virtual gear changes and seat shakers with matching display graphics to recreate some of the sensations associated with combustion-powered performance cars.

Beneath the technology, the GT SUV uses an 800V electrical architecture and is offered in GT 53, GT 55 and GT 63 versions. Power ranges from 544hp to 1,169hp, with the flagship GT 63 capable of accelerating from 0-60mph in as little as 2.5 seconds.

The larger 128kWh battery supports DC charging at up to 710kW, potentially adding up to 450km of WLTP range in 10 minutes under suitable conditions. Mercedes-AMG claims a 10-80 per cent charge can take around 12 minutes at a compatible high-power charger.

With its combination of expansive displays, configurable software and performance-focused controls, the GT SUV shows how digital technology is becoming central to the modern performance-car experience – not just an add-on to the driving hardware.
