Volvo is bringing Apple Music integration to more than 2 million vehicles through a new over-the-air software update, giving drivers direct access to one of the world’s largest music streaming platforms from their car’s infotainment system.

The update means Volvo owners can access Apple Music directly through their vehicle, with new customers eligible for up to three months of free subscription access to discover artists, playlists and live radio during their journeys.

The latest Volvo EX60 will feature Apple Music built in from launch, while existing owners of compatible models will receive the update as part of Volvo’s continued move towards software-defined vehicles.

For drivers of Volvo’s latest electric models, including the EX60, EX90 and ES90, the experience can be enhanced further through Apple Music Spatial Audio powered by Dolby Atmos technology when combined with the optional Bowers & Wilkins premium sound system.

Designed to create a more immersive listening environment, Dolby Atmos places instruments and vocals around the listener rather than simply creating left and right stereo channels, helping transform the cabin into a more engaging audio space.

The Bowers & Wilkins system available in selected Volvo models has been engineered around each vehicle’s interior acoustics, using strategically positioned speakers throughout the cabin to deliver a more natural and detailed listening experience.

Alwin Bakkenes, head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars, said: “Many of our customers use Apple Music on their phones or in their homes today. By bringing Apple Music directly into our cars, we're making them an extraordinary place to experience music. You’ll feel as if you’re right in the middle of a concert hall or an arena during your favourite live performance or immersed in the latest music in Spatial Audio exactly as the artist intended – a truly emotional listening experience.”

Apple Music offers access to more than 100 million songs, with drivers able to sign in using their Apple account and bring across existing playlists and music libraries. The update will roll out across a wide range of Volvo models from model year 2020 onwards, although timing will vary depending on vehicle model.

As manufacturers continue to invest in connected services and premium cabin experiences, music and audio are becoming increasingly important parts of the modern driving experience, with software updates now able to transform vehicles long after they leave the showroom.
