Fancy a coffee at the football? Need to run some power tools at the bottom of the garden? Lost electricity at home? Your Volvo EX30 may now be able to help.
Volvo is rolling out a free over-the-air software update for the EX30 that introduces Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) functionality, allowing owners to use the car’s battery to power external electrical equipment.
The system works through a V2L adapter connected to the car’s external charging port. Once plugged in, it can supply up to 3kW at 16A, meaning there’s enough juice for everything from cooking equipment and fridges to power tools and, presumably, a rather excessive number of camping gadgets.
The car will automatically stop supplying power if the battery level drops below 20%, so you shouldn’t be able to accidentally turn your EX30 into a very expensive phone charger with four wheels and a flat battery.
The feature is being introduced to existing as well as new EX30 customers through the over-the-air update, giving owners a new capability without having to visit a dealer. They can also enjoy a redesigned settings menu and customisable contextual bar, while Plug & Charge is being introduced for compatible EX30s in certain European markets.
There is a catch, naturally. The V2L adapter is sold separately and availability varies by market and vehicle configuration. The functionality is also not being offered on EX30 models in the US, Canada, Mexico, Korea, Taiwan or Japan.
