In-Car Gaming Leads Pac-Man’s 45th Anniversary with VW EV at MCM Comic-Con London

There are worse ways to celebrate a birthday than by turning an electric van into a giant Pac-Man arcade machine.

Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles has revealed a specially wrapped Pac-Man-themed ID. Buzz at MCM Comic Con London this past weekend, marking 45 years of the legendary arcade game while also showing off its growing in-car gaming ambitions.

By scanning a QR code, showgoers could turn their smartphones into controllers

The van was created alongside gaming platform AirConsole and Bandai Namco Entertainment, with visitors able to jump inside the ID. Buzz and play Pac-Man Championship Edition directly through the vehicle’s infotainment screen while parked.

Players simply scanned a QR code to use their smartphones as a controller, turning the ID. Buzz into a mobile multiplayer gaming lounge.

It’s exactly the sort of thing the retro-styled electric van was made for. The ID. Buzz already leans heavily into nostalgia with its modern interpretation of the classic VW camper, and now the company is pairing that throwback feel with one of gaming’s most recognisable icons.

The move also highlights how quickly in-car entertainment is evolving beyond music streaming and navigation. AirConsole’s platform is designed specifically for vehicles, bringing proper multiplayer gaming into the cabin while the car is stationary – something likely to become more common as larger infotainment displays and software-defined interiors continue to evolve.

VW says the updated ID. Buzz arriving later this year will feature a new Innovision infotainment system with an expanded app store, allowing drivers and passengers to download gaming, streaming and parking apps directly to the vehicle.
