Pioneer Launches Its First On-Dash Screen for Cars Keeping the Factory Head Unit

Pioneer is putting a screen on top of the dashboard rather than inside it with the SPH-OD880, its first on-dash multimedia unit.

The 8.8in touchscreen is designed to bring a modern infotainment experience to a vast range of vehicles, including those where replacing the factory head unit isn’t practical.

The 1280x480 WSVGA capacitive touchscreen features officially certified Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, available both wired and wirelessly, with built-in Wi-Fi handling the connection. There’s also Bluetooth for hands-free calling and audio streaming, WebLink and support for Waze and Spotify through CarPlay or Android Auto. Also included is a 10-band graphic equaliser, customisable backgrounds and Full HD video playback via USB, while a rear camera input supports both CVBS and AHD 1.0 720p cameras.

The clever bit, though, is the installation. Pioneer describes the SPH-OD880 as a plug-and-play upgrade, with power supplied from the vehicle’s 12V cigar lighter socket. It can connect to the existing stereo using an Aux input or its built-in FM transmitter, so there’s no need to rip out the factory system just to get CarPlay on the dashboard. Hard-wired installation is also possible, and Pioneer includes a GPS antenna and external Bluetooth microphone.

The unit measures 22.6cm wide, 12.5cm high and 6.5cm deep, so this isn’t exactly a discreet little phone holder. Then again, there’s not much point having an 8.8in screen if you can’t see it.

Pioneer says the SPH-OD880 has been built to its automotive-grade standards, with temperature-resistant construction and an operating range of -10 up to 60 degrees C.

It may look like a remarkably simple solution – priced at just £299 – but that’s the appeal. Rather than dismantling the dashboard, hunting down the correct fascia and discovering your car has approximately 47 different connectors behind the stereo, you can simply put the SPH-OD880 on top and plug it in.

And when Pioneer isn’t scooping an EISA award for the world's first aftermarket head unit with Dolby Atmos, or reimagining old favourites from its archive, it has apparently decided that sometimes the best place for a new screen is simply on top of the dashboard.
