History of Alpine Documentary Dials Back into Car Audio’s Golden Age

Alpine Electronics fans, brace yourselves – this one’s a proper time machine.

Industry veteran David Black has put together a self-funded, three-part documentary on Vimeo charting the early days of Alpine and the era that helped shape modern car audio culture. In total, it runs for just over three hours, so it’s less “quick watch” and more “clear your evening, make a brew, settle in”.

David Black, industry veteran and one of the first employees at Alpine Electronics

Black isn’t just any name in passing either. As one of Alpine’s first six employees, he went on to lead the brand’s aftermarket advertising as EVP from 1979 to 1994 – a period that produced some of the most iconic car audio campaigns ever seen.

And yes, that includes the legendary Alpine Lamborghini collaboration from the early 1980s – the kind of marketing that still gets mentioned in install bays and retro gear forums like it happened yesterday.

The documentary itself leans heavily into that golden era energy – when car audio wasn’t just about spec sheets and screen sizes, but culture, community and a bit of creative madness thrown in for good measure.

Black talks through inspiration taken from Yamaha in the early ’80s, the tight-knit Alpine “family” across dealers and staff, and how that community helped turn a product line into something far bigger than just hardware in a dash.

That sense of community is still very much alive today too. Enthusiast groups with tens of thousands of members continue to trade, restore and obsess over classic Alpine gear – from the old green-chicklet head units to vintage mobile kits and everything in between. And then there’s the enduring legend of the Alpine 7909, which refuses to fade quietly into history.

If you’re after nostalgia or just want to understand why people still get misty-eyed about old head units, this is well worth your time. The full documentary is split into three parts on Vimeo, with links here: Episode 1, Episode 2 and Episode 3.

And, of course, Alpine’s story continues today, with Horn Distribution handling its presence in the UK.
