A vintage suitcase in a convertible sports car is usually there to carry your holiday clothes, spare shirts or perhaps a pair of driving gloves. In this Porsche 911, though, it has a rather different job: hiding two subwoofers.
The custom installation comes from California-based Hi-Tech Car Audio, which has disguised a bass box as a suitcase to house a pair of JL Audio TW1 shallow-mount subwoofers. Mounted face-down, the drivers are carefully concealed inside an enclosure that looks right at home.
The bottom of the ‘suitcase’ has been cut out to accommodate the speakers, while straps help secure the assembly. It’s a neat solution for anyone who wants more low-end punch without filling their cabin with conspicuous aftermarket hardware.

And the luggage isn’t the only part of the system that’s been carefully integrated. A US-model Alpine iLX-507 head unit provides the modern source, while JL Audio VXi amplifiers power the system from the boot at the front of the car, mounted next to the passive crossovers for the speakers. A JL Audio VXi controller has even been fitted in place of the factory cigarette lighter, keeping control within easy reach without introducing an obvious add-on.
Alpine three-way component speakers handle the front, with separate Alpine speakers fitted at the rear. The result is a comprehensive audio upgrade designed to retain the car’s original appearance while delivering a sound system that packs a punch.

Hi-Tech Car Audio’s video of the installation has prompted plenty of praise for the clean workmanship. And for UK installers wanting to replicate the system, Alpine and JL Audio products are available through Horn Distribution – which recently celebrated 35 years in business.
But as stealth installations go, hiding a pair of subwoofers inside something that looks like luggage is a pretty inspired bit of thinking.
