Drivers, take note: September 2025 wasn’t just the start of sweater weather – it was a record-breaking month for UK car sales. Registrations jumped 13.7% to 312,887, the best September performance since 2020.
Electrified vehicles are leading the charge. Battery Electric Vehicles (BEVs) hit 72,779 units, up 29.1% – that’s nearly one in four new cars now fully electric. Plug-in hybrids soared 56.4%, and hybrids made up 15.3%. All told, more than half of new vehicles were electrified, a big change for a market used to petrol guzzlers.
Fleet sales dominated with a 16.9% rise, private buyers were up 8.9%, and even business registrations rocketed 28.6%. With these numbers, tech brands and installers can expect a busy few months: more EVs hitting the roads could mean more demand for high-end car audio, infotainment upgrades, and accessory kits.
SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes said: “Electrified vehicles are powering market growth… the Electric Car Grant helps break down affordability barriers.”
