Volkswagen has unveiled the all-new ID Cross, an all-electric compact SUV that aims to bring technology normally reserved for larger premium models into a more affordable segment.

While Volkswagen is understandably talking about range and pricing, it’s the in-car technology that caught our attention.

The ID Cross introduces Volkswagen’s latest infotainment architecture, centred around a 12.9in touchscreen paired with a 10.25in Digital Cockpit Pro. Drivers can even switch the digital instruments into a retro display inspired by the original MkI Golf, complete with classic-style gauges reimagined for the electric era.

Higher-spec models can also be fitted with a 425W Harman Kardon premium sound system, featuring 10 speakers, a centre channel and dedicated subwoofer. It’s another sign that manufacturers increasingly see factory audio as a key selling point, particularly in EVs where quieter cabins allow better sound quality.

The SUV also debuts several technologies rarely seen in this class, including Connected Travel Assist with automatic traffic light recognition, advanced parking functions and adaptive suspension. A rear-view camera is included, and smart parking aids with 360-degree Area View and Park Assist Pro are among the other potential features.

Volkswagen says the ID Cross will eventually be offered with outputs from 116PS to 211PS, battery options up to 52kWh and a WLTP range of up to 427km. Expect prices to start at around £28,000, rising depending on trim level and extras.

The announcement follows a growing trend of manufacturers using premium audio partnerships to differentiate new EVs. Earlier this month, Skoda confirmed its forthcoming Peaq SUV will feature an optional bespoke Sonos sound system.
